In lesson 3.1 Matthias tells Sandra: Hey, du siehst ja nicht gerade sehr froh
lich aus!

why is the word "ja" used after nicht? Does it emphasize her not looking happy? Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

yes, that's exactly why. It's colloquial to add a "ja" and it has the function of emphasizing the fact that Sandra is not looking happy.

I hope that helps.
